Learning to Love the Holiday Cleanup: How to Clean Up after the Holiday Season

by Kesha Kennedy

For most of us, the holiday season is a time for celebration, with big meals and lots of fun activities. This can make it difficult to keep our homes clean and organized throughout the day. Here are some helpful tips on how to clean up after a busy holiday season.

1. Assess Household Cleaning Needs

If you're like most people, your first instinct is probably to grab whatever is easiest and cheapest. Most of us don't want to spend a lot of time or money on something we use only rarely. And sometimes it's hard to know what really works best for our families needs.

You'll also want to determine what areas need more attention than others. For example, if you live in an apartment with many rooms and no central kitchen or dining room, it might make sense to focus on these areas first so that guests can get comfortable as quickly as possible when they arrive at your home.

2. Check Windows and Doors for Damage

Windows can be really easy to overlook after the holidays. But checking for damage is important, especially if you live in an area that experiences a lot of snow or ice storms. For example, if your window is cracked, you should get it fixed immediately.

Don't forget to check inside your house as well; it's easy to miss damage you can't see. If you notice any damage and aren't sure what caused it, call a professional window company and have them come out for an inspection. You may be able to save money by having them inspect before calling a window replacement company.

3. Dispose of Your Christmas Tree and Put Holiday Decorations in Storage

Trees are a great way to brighten up your home, but picking up and disposing them can be a challenge. When the holidays are over, you'll need to get rid of the tree and any decorations that are still around. Don't put it off. It's time to go through your house and throw out anything that isn't needed by January 1st.

4. Wash and Iron Holiday Linens

Pick up some hot water and detergent from the dollar store and spend an hour or two cleaning your holiday linens so they'll be ready for 2023.

5. Clean the Living Room Area Rug

The living room area rug is one of those things that can make a huge impact on the aesthetic appeal of your home. If you're going to be cleaning up after the holiday season, then this is one piece of furniture that you should definitely take care of. You don't have to worry about finding a spot for it in your home—it will look as good as new when you're done!

Family gatherings are one of the greatest parts of the holidays, and the memories made during them will last a lifetime. This is why it is extra important to slow down and enjoy everything that this special time of year has to offer. At the same time, though, it's important not to get too caught up in the whirlwind of holiday activities, as this can make clean up after the holidays a stressful ordeal. Instead, take some time to relax with friends and family while enjoying the decorations and holiday cheer. Then, after all is said and done, you can go forth into the New Year with a clean home, ready for new adventures in 2023!

Don't let holiday cleanup overwhelm you; take it step by step.
